PREP | transFORM's Summer Home Checklist
Whether you missed out on spring cleaning or you’re just looking to spruce up your home, summer is the perfect time to embark on important interior projects. Getting organized for the season will make your time more enjoyable, and there are certain rooms that it makes sense to tackle while the weather is warm. By following this checklist, you’ll not only transform your home into a functional living space but you’ll relish the remainder of summer in style.
1. Organize the Garage
After a winter of snow, salt and grit accumulating in your garage, now’s the time to get it neat and tidy. To make the most of your outdoor time this season, keep all your stuff organized and easily accessible. Consider investing in a wall track system where you can hang bikes and sports gear. Add a custom storage system for shovels and yard tools while stowing hoses and extension cords in a freestanding closet.
2. Purge the Pantry
If you love to entertain, get your house ready for surprise guests and spontaneous cookouts by cleaning out your fridge and pantry. Sweep up all the crumbs and get rid of any food that has expired — or that looks older than your youngest child. Preparing your pantry allows you stock up on new summer staples like potato chips, ketchup and barbecue sauce. Keep these items extra neat with pull-out racks, sliding chrome baskets and a pantry corner carousel.
3. Keep the Laundry Room Dry
Summer is full of trips to the pool or beach, and wet towels and swimsuits can pile up. Be sure to remove wet clothes from the washing machine as soon as the cycle is finished so everything can dry properly. It’s also a good idea to check towels at the end of your dryer’s cycle to make sure they’re thoroughly dry. If your belongings are too delicate for the dryer, hang them from drying racks and valet rods. These steps will help you avoid mold and mildew all season long.
4. Stock Up on Supplies
Summer requires a whole different load of supplies, including sunscreen, extra deodorant, insect repellent and aloe to soothe a sunburn. Make space in your utility closet for neatly organized wicker baskets filled with these supplies. Buy enough to share and bring out a basket or two for guests to use at your next barbecue — they’ll be eternally grateful not to get bitten or burned!
5. Lock Up Your Belongings
If you plan on taking an extended vacation away from home, make sure your valuables are safely secured while you’re gone. After all, crooks don’t take a break just because you are! Store important documents in custom cabinetry designed with security in mind. Home offices are often a thief’s first stop, so it pays to secure all your business items under lock and key. You should also store precious gems and jewelry in a specialty, velvet-lined jewelry drawer with a lock in your bedroom closet.
6. Make the Season Count
Once you’ve organized everything, from your home office to your cabinets, it’s time to relax! The most important thing to take care of this summer is yourself, so enjoy your time in the sun. Schedule that massage, take a trip to a special place you’ve always wanted to see, and spend time relaxing outdoors with family and friends. Summer weather only lasts a couple of months, so make the most of it before the season slips away.
